On Saturday the 'ITV 7' Prize of £50K was won by a single bettor when'Lady Buttons' hacked up to win in the final race at Newbury!

I'll bet that person was on the edge of their seat throughout the whole of that exciting race! And the 50 grand will certainly pay for a few Christmas presents...

Beforehand, the main race of the day was the 'Ladbrokes Trophy Cup' . This race was run over three miles and two furlongs with twenty-one jumps to negotiate.  'Thomas Patrick' was the well-backed 3-1 Favourite, with 'Elegant Escape'a second 9-2 Favourite.Watched by an enthusiastic crowd of thousands, the horses lined up for the crucial Start. Champion Jockey Richard Johnson was actually smiling as he steered the Favourite into position. After the first two jumps Thomas Patrick and 'Dingo Dollar' were out at the front of the pack, each vying for the lead. Thomas Patrick cleared the first open ditch well to take the lead. 'Beware the Bear' and 'American' were pushed along to challenge . All the horses took the single water jump well, but shortly afterwards American was pulled up. With eight jumps remaining Elegant Escape tried to get back on terms , moving up towards Thomas Patrick. He succeeded two jumps later, but then Dingo Dollar jumped superbly to overtake both of them. However, he made a mistake at the next jump, and both he and Thomas Patrick lost ground. 12-1 outsider 'Sizing Tennessee'now became prominent , jumping better than his rivals, urged on by his jockey the great Tom Scudamore. Thomas Patrick was pulled up, and the race began in earnest between Dingo Dollar and Sizing Tennessee. Scudamore got his mount into the lead by several lengths, and after expertly jumping the last hurdle Sizing Tennessee flew home to win by eleven lengths.

Winning jockey Scudamore matched the feat of his jockey father Peter by winning the Ladbroke Trophy for the second time. Tom declared: " This is one for my grandfather, whose funeral I couldn't attend yesterday. It means an awful lot." Trainer Colin Izzard was also delighted as he had trained the winner, and also the Runner-Up Elegant Escape.

Also at Newbury, the 'Ladbroke Long Distance Hurdle' race was a thriller. 'Unowhatimeanharry' was the 5-2 Favourite, with 'Sam Spinner' well regarded as the 3-1 second favourite. After the second of the twelve jumps Sam Spinner had jumped into second place.'The Mighty Don' and 'Monmella' chased him . As they all made the turn for home Unowhatimeanharry was under pressure to preform , and hit the front after Sam Spinner fell, brought down by a previously falling horse.  He went on to win for top jockey Barry Geraghty, having previously won the race in 2016 for trainer Harry Fry. (Sounds like the 'Harry and Barry' show!).

The 'UK Snooker Championship' at the Barbican, York was no less dramatic with a major shock as World Number One Mark Selby was taken down by an amateur, and four times World Champion John Higgins 'The Wizard of Wishaw' was ousted by fellow Scot Alan McManus. Defending Champion Ronnie 'The Rocket' O'Sullivan fittingly provided the most tension in his match against Irishman Ken Doherty.

The Rocket missed a costly black ball, and also missed a difficult shot on a red ball which lost him the first frame. Doherty played wonderfully well to lead by 4 frames to 1 just before the Interval. He looked fully in command, playing at a fast pace. It was an extraordinary match , with the Rocket missing several relatively easy reds, and a crucial brown ball. But like the great Champion he is, having won the World Title five times, O'Sullivan gradually overturned the score to level the match 5 frames all. He struck the balls with more confidence and authority, using his trademark power and precision. Now Doherty made mistakes, and the Rocket showed his true mettle and talent by eventually winning by 6 frames to 5, fist-pumping his hard -won victory. Later he exclaimed: "I have been reincarnated today!"

In  a busy weekend, the brilliantly talented singer Dalton Harris won ' The X Factor' Final, with the wonderful Scarlett Lee the Runner -Up.

Just in time to buy his newly released Christmas single!
